The Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation recently awarded its annual scholarship to Ryan Zeiler of Hawley, Pa.

Zeiler, who attends Wallenpaupack Area High School, will receive a $1,000 scholarship from the Pennsylvania Chapter of the Wild Turkey Federation and will be entered into the national scholarship competition in Edgefield, S.C. The national winner, which will be selected from all the states that participate in the NWTF program, receives a $10,000 scholarship.

"Today’s youth are our future,’’ said Carl Mowry, chairman of the board and president of the Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation. "When we get youth involved with hunting and conservation, they will take care of wildlife for future generations."

Zeiler is a member of the Lake Region Longbeards in Hamlin, Pa.

Along with his membership in the National Wild Turkey Federation Jakes Program, Zeiler is very active school and community functions.

Zeiler, who is an Eagle Scout, is involved in community projects including Special Olympics skiing, American Cancer Relay For Life, wildlife food planting, road cleanup through adopt-a-highway and American Legion’s Keystone Boys State.

At Wallenpaupack High School, he’s a varsity soccer captain and wrestling captain along with achieving such honors as National Honor Society, Student Council, Teens Against Tobacco Use, tennis and marching/concert band. He’s currently ranked sixth in his class of 249 with a 4.44 grade point average.

He is planning on attending college this fall and major in engineering at either the United States Naval Academy, Penn State University or Virginia Tech.

"Theodore Roosevelt was a great conservationist, and during his terms as president he preserved almost 200 million acres of government land as National Parks. He once said, ‘There can be no greater issue than that of conservation in this country.’ I agree with that statement and for the past 17 years, I have been taught to respect, manage and conserve our national resources. In those years I have learned that it is my responsibility to ensure that the outdoors will be remain pristine and beautiful for generations to come,’’ Zeiler said in his scholarship application.
